The order of a Hindi wedding card
Most Hindi cards, printed or digital, use the same blocks in the same order:
- Invocation: the name of Lord Ganesha or your family deity
- Shloka: a short Sanskrit verse (optional)
- Invitation: who is inviting, and to whose wedding
- Names: the groom and bride, with parents and grandparents
- Date and venue: the wedding day and the main venue
- Programme: each ceremony with its date and time
- Family names: the relatives who look forward to seeing you
- Bal manuhar: a playful line from the children of the family
- Contact and RSVP: whom to call, and by when to reply
Opening lines and shlokas
The card opens with an invocation. The most common is ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥, “salutations to Lord Ganesha”, the remover of obstacles. Many families add this shloka below it:
॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥
Meaning: “O Lord Ganesha, with the curved trunk and mighty body, shining like a billion suns: remove the obstacles from all my work, always.”
Another verse many families print, praising Lord Vishnu:
मंगलम् भगवान विष्णुः, मंगलम् गरुड़ध्वजः।
मंगलम् पुण्डरीकाक्षः, मंगलाय तनो हरिः॥
Meaning: “Lord Vishnu is auspicious; he whose banner bears Garuda is auspicious; the lotus-eyed one is auspicious; Hari is the home of all that is auspicious.”
