RSVP Meaning on a Wedding Card, and How Online RSVP Works
RSVP means "please reply". What it means on an Indian wedding card, how to reply as a guest, and how couples can collect RSVPs online without endless calls.
RSVP full form and meaning
RSVP is an abbreviation of répondez s'il vous plaît: "please reply" (Merriam-Webster). It was borrowed from French etiquette and is now used on invitations everywhere, including Indian wedding cards, usually followed by names and phone numbers or a reply link.
RSVP meaning in Hindi
In Hindi, RSVP simply means कृपया उत्तर दें (kripya uttar dein): "please reply". On a wedding card it asks you to let the family know whether you'll be coming.
What RSVP asks you to do, as a guest
- Reply either way. "No" is just as useful to the hosts as "yes".
- Reply by the date given, or as soon as you can if there's no date.
- Say how many of you are coming, counting only the people named on the invitation.
- Mention which events you'll attend if there are several (Mehendi, Sangeet, wedding, reception).
- Use the method given: a call, a WhatsApp message or the RSVP button on the invitation.
- Tell them if your plans change.
How to reply to an RSVP: examples
- Accepting: Thank you for the invitation! [Name] and I will be happy to attend the wedding and the reception. Looking forward to it! 🎉
- Declining: Thank you so much for inviting us. Unfortunately we can't travel on those dates, but our blessings are with you both. ❤️
- Some events only: We'll be there for the Sangeet and the wedding, but won't be able to make the reception. Thank you for including us!
Why RSVP matters at an Indian wedding
For a long time, many families didn't ask for replies at all: an invitation meant the whole family was expected, and the hosts planned generously. That's harder today:
- caterers quote per plate
- venues have capacity limits
- hotel rooms and transport are booked in advance
- each ceremony may have a different guest list
A clear headcount for every event saves money and stress. Couples who ask for replies early, and make replying easy, get the most accurate numbers.
How couples can collect RSVPs
| Method | Effort for you | Accuracy | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone calls | High | Good, if you write everything down | Personal; best for elders |
| WhatsApp replies | Medium | Patchy: answers get lost in chats | Easy for guests; hard to count |
| A separate online form | Medium | Good | Guests have to open a second link |
| RSVP built into the invitation | Low | Good: answers are collected in one place | Guests reply while they're reading the details |
How online RSVP works on a wedding invitation website
The guest opens your invitation link, reads the details and taps the reply button. A short form asks for their response, and the answer lands in your dashboard with everyone else's, so you can see at a glance who's coming. No spreadsheet copying, no "did Mausi reply?".
On VowStory, the Utsav and Maharaja plans include a built-in RSVP form, with replies tracked in your dashboard. Shubharambh shows your family's names in the RSVP section instead, so guests know whom to contact. You can compare plans or look at the Utsav and Maharaja templates. When to set your RSVP deadline
- Two to three weeks before the first ceremony works for most weddings. That leaves time to chase late replies before your caterer and venue need final numbers.
- For a destination wedding, set it earlier, so rooms and travel can be booked.
- Put the date in the invitation itself, not only in a follow-up message.

How to follow up with guests who haven't replied
- Send one friendly reminder a few days before the deadline. We have ready-made reminder messages.
- Call elders instead of messaging them twice.
- After the deadline, plan with the replies you have, and keep a small buffer for late "yes" answers.
What to write in the RSVP line of your card
Keep it short: Kindly reply by [date] to [Name] ([number]) or through the invitation link. For more wording, see our guide to the RSVP line and the rest of the card.
