The Haldi, Mehendi and Sangeet are where the wedding celebrations really begin. Each one needs its own short invitation: which function it is, when and where, and what to wear. Here are 30 messages you can copy and send on WhatsApp today.

What every function invitation needs

Whatever the function, check that your message has these:

  • the name of the function, such as Haldi, Mehendi or Sangeet
  • whose function it is: the bride’s, the groom’s, or both
  • the date and the start time, with AM or PM
  • the venue, with a map link
  • the dress code or colour, if there is one
  • a line asking guests to reply, if you need a head count

That is all. The full story of the wedding belongs on the main invitation. For that, see our wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp.

Colours and dress codes

These are common choices, not rules. Families and regions differ, so say it plainly in your message.

FunctionCommon choiceA line you can add
HaldiYellow, white or old clothes“Please wear yellow, and clothes you don’t mind getting stained.”
MehendiGreen, bright colours, comfortable outfits“Wear something bright and comfortable.”
SangeetFestive, sparkly or Indo-western, often with a theme“Theme: [Theme]. Think colour and sparkle.”
CocktailWestern or Indo-western evening wear“Dress code: cocktail.”

Who to invite to which function

Many families keep the Haldi and Mehendi for close family and friends, invite a few more people to the Sangeet, and invite everyone to the wedding. There is no single right way. What matters is that each guest knows exactly where they are expected.

  • Make a list for each function. Our guide to the Indian wedding guest list shows a simple way to do it.
  • Keep private functions off the shared invitation. If the Haldi is only for close family, send its details in a separate message (number 24), rather than on the invitation everyone receives.
  • Send the function messages with the main invitation, six to eight weeks before. See when to send wedding invitations.

Day-before reminders

A one-line reminder the day before each function stops late arrivals and lost guests.

  1. Haldi

See you tomorrow at the Haldi! 💛 [Time] at [Venue]. Wear something you don’t mind getting yellow. Map: [Link]

  2. Mehendi

Tomorrow is Mehendi day 🌿 From [Time] at [Venue]. Map: [Link]

  4. Change of time

A small change: tomorrow’s [Function] now starts at [New time], at [Venue]. Everything else is the same. [Link]

  5. In Hindi

Mistakes to avoid

  • A time without AM or PM. “7” can mean morning or evening.
  • No map. Function venues are often homes, lawns or banquet halls.
  • Sending every function to everyone, when some are only for close family.
  • Long paragraphs. Guests read these on a phone, often in a hurry.
  • Too many emojis in messages to elders. One or two is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

What do you write in a Haldi invitation message?

Say whose Haldi it is, the date and time, the venue with a map, and what to wear. Yellow, or clothes guests don’t mind staining, is the usual request. Messages 1–7 above are ready to copy.

Should the Haldi and Mehendi have separate invitations?

If the same guests come to both, one message listing both is enough. If the guest lists differ, send separate messages, so nobody arrives at a function they weren’t invited to.

How early should we send Haldi and Sangeet invitations?

With the main invitation, six to eight weeks before the wedding. Then send a short reminder the day before each function.

What colour should guests wear to a Mehendi?

Green and bright colours are common, but it is your choice. Put the colour in the message, so guests don’t have to guess.

Is it okay to invite guests to the functions on WhatsApp?

Yes. Most function invitations are sent on WhatsApp now. Call elders personally as well. Here is how to send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp the right way.
