In this guide
Roka, sagai, sakharpuda: what to call it
The same occasion has different names, and the right word makes the message feel like your family wrote it:
- Roka: Punjabi and North Indian. Often small and immediate family only, sometimes held soon after the match is fixed.
- Sagai or mangni: Hindi-speaking families; the formal engagement.
- Sakharpuda: Marathi.
- Nischitartham or nichayathartham: Telugu and Tamil.
- Ring ceremony: used across India, especially for larger parties.
What to include
- Who is inviting: the parents, both families, or the couple.
- The couple’s names (and often their parents’ names).
- The occasion, using your family’s word for it.
- Date, day and time.
- Venue, with a map link.
- A dress code, if there is one.
- An RSVP or contact number.

Timing and etiquette
- When to send: two to three weeks ahead for a party, a few days for a small roka at home. For guests who must travel, send a save the date first. Our save the date messages have examples.
- Call the elders first, then send the message. A grandparent hearing about it from a forwarded WhatsApp is the most common way families get this wrong.
- One message per family, addressed to the head of the family, unless you’re inviting individuals separately.
- If the dress code matters, say it (“Indian festive”, “pastel colours”), so guests don’t have to ask.
An invitation for the engagement
If the engagement has more than one event, such as a ring ceremony in the evening and a lunch the next day, a web invitation can list each with its own time and map. It can also be updated if the date moves. You can make one on VowStory and preview it free.
Frequently asked questions
Who sends the engagement invitation?
Traditionally the parents, especially for a roka or sagai. For larger ring-ceremony parties, many couples now send it themselves or jointly with their parents.
How early should we send engagement invitations?
Two to three weeks before a party. For a small family roka, a few days’ notice is normal. Send earlier if guests need to travel.
Can we send an engagement invitation on WhatsApp?
Yes. That’s now the usual way. Call close elders first, and send one message per family.
